Progress on the credit card

Still no news of the purse/wallet: as June said, an honest person would have handed it back by now. My feeling is that the cab's next passenger thought Christmas had come early.

However, June has varied her itinerary and headed off to Manchester today where there is an outpost of one of her credit card providers. It is reassuring to know that she should be back in business. It seems that all your advice to "shop 'till you drop" on British bargains has fallen on deaf ears. "I'm not much interested in shopping."

She remains concerned about the loss of her drivers licence, though. If I have understood this right (and I may not have) she thinks that she may need more than just her passport for identity on re-entering the States.

Is this right and if so what can you suggest?

Hey DP:

The ONLY identification she will need to get back into the U.S. is her Passport. Course, if she is going to rent a car while on holiday, she will then require a license.

She seems very keen to drive. She keeps getting in to my side of the car!

Her passport is sufficient ID for entry to the US and all air travel to and within the US.

If she left her car at the airport, however, it's not a legal license to drive.

She should be able (or possibly her husband) to contact the State DMV and they will issue a temporary license until she can get a replacement.

However her passport is sufficient to get her out of the UK and back into the US.

The info as to replacing her driver' s license may be found at http://www.dmv.com/la/louisiana/drivers-license-replacement. If she has a police report it says they'll waive the fee. Seems as though she has to go to the DMV though.

I second all of the above advice for the Driver's License. Since I don't drive, I only have the passport now, and they've always let me back in the country (for the time being).

As for getting in on the "driver's side" of the car, us Yanks take our lives in our hands when we cross city streets in the UK. I noticed special instructions for the Yanks on certain crosswalks in central London when I was there. Thank God for the "central reservation."

For awhile the US required 2 pieces of ID to get back into one's own country - but now passport is enough. I used my driver's license and Costco card when I came in from Canada!! The guy was laughing so hard he forgot to keep me in line.

She could show the wanted poster that is on the wall of most Post Offices... (just trying to help, Mimi!)...

And I join IT's call for details! Was it like a cat staring down a dog? Was there uncomfortable silence? Were there apologies? Did one of MP's 3 canines bite her? Inquiring dogs want to know!

She cam eback to Leeds from Manchester via Sheffield. Don't ask me why.

MP left a message about it in the comments at my place. Come see. it's with the post asking for prayers.

Oh, and if you have a passport that's all you need to get back in. Never heard of the two pieces of ID thing -- wasn't that just for Canada in the days when they didn't require a passport?

In haste,
Jane

Yes, Jane, I think it was two pieces of ID from Canada and mexico if you didn't have a passport

If she visits the outpost of one of her credit card companies --she could get a picture ID on her new card.... I'll bet a picture ID is essential in restoring her driver's license.

She has a picture ID, her passport.

MP could rent the car for grandmere. She's from the south, after all, and is entirely trustworthy, even when driving on the wrong side of the road.

:)

Now, if mimi were trying to get home from Canada...all she would have to do is charm the customs' officers, which I'm very sure she could do, having done so myself many times.

LOL

Much love to you, grandmere. Keep breathing, and don't let any opportunity pass you by. There is more humanity in the world than any of us can imagine.

You need more than charm to get across any border these days.

Please reassure Mimi that her passport is a legal document for all transactions requiring official identification in the US, and will function in that regard in lieu of her driver's license.

Scott: here it is the right side of the road, unless you meant your side in which case she would be on the wrong side, if you take my meaning.

I need a nap now.

There's always a spare room here while she applies for Immigration .....

In my years of living abroad and travelling back to the States, having a passport has always been sufficient. My three kids and I have never been asked for more than that. Shoot, the only photo ID my little ones have is a passport. Please assure Grandmere Mimi that she will be fine for international travel.

If I was Mimi I'd just stay here. She can be our very own national treasure.
